PH Expresses Sympathy to Vietnam over Typhoon Deaths; No Filipino Casualties Reported
07 November 2017 — The Philippines today expressed its sympathies to Vietnam after Typhoon Damrey struck the country over the weekend, leaving more than 60 people dead and thousands of others displaced.
"The Vietnamese people are in our thoughts and prayers as they recover from Typhoon Damrey," Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano said shortly before leaving for Da Nang to attend the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings.
"Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives and their homes as a result of this disaster," said Secretary Cayetano, who will be assisting President Rodrigo R. Duterte in the summit.
The Philippine Embassy in Hanoi said no Filipinos have so far been reported to be among those affected by the typhoon and the resulting floods which struck the central part of the country.
Ambassador Noel Servigon said the Embassy is in touch with leaders of the 4,000-strong Filipino Community to make sure all of them are safe and accounted for.
Vietnamese authorities said 61 people were killed and 28 were missing as a result of the typhoon and from the resulting floods and landslides. More than 2000 homes were also reported to have been destroyed and more than 80,000 damaged. END
