HRMO Conducts Seminar on Diabetes
28 November 2017 PASAY — The Human Resources Management Office, in partnership with The Medical City, conducted a seminar on diabetes on November 23 at the Bulwagang Elpidio Quirino. The seminar aimed to raise awareness on diabetes, its risk and prevention among DFA personnel.
Dr. Edison So, the seminar’s resource speaker, underscored that diabetes is a key health concern that can lead to different complications such as stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, and peripheral vascular disease which can lead to amputations.
World Health Organization estimates that diabetes affects 422 million people worldwide. In the Philippines, about 1 out of every 5 Filipinos (approximately 11 million) have prediabetes and diabetes combined.
To prevent diabetes, Dr. So advised the following non-pharmacologic treatments such as: eating in moderation; eating foods high in fiber while avoiding the ones which are high in sugar, salt and fat; drinking lots of water; regular exercise at least 5 times a week; and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels.
At the end of the seminar, HBA1C and random blood sugar tests were conducted for interested participants free of charge.
The seminar is a part of HRMO’s lecture series on common health issues of DFA personnel aimed at fostering well-being and enhancing productivity in the workplace. END
