La Union RCO Joins the Philippine Heart Month Celebration

02 March 2018 LA UNION — In conjunction with the Department’s advocacy to promote healthy living from among its members, the Department of Foreign Affairs La Union Regional consular Office participated in the celebration of Philippine Heart Month 2018at the Sevilla Covered Court in San Fernando City, La Union on 28 February.
To jumpstart the celebration, a Fun Walk, led by members of Department of Health Region 1 (DOH-RO 1) and the Philippine National Police Region 1, started at 6:00 AM along Diversion Road, followed by a 30-minute Zumba session by members of the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC) at the Sevilla covered court.
Several booths were set up by the City Health Office of San Fernando and the Philippine National Police-Region 1’s Dentist Deployment Program, to serve free Risk Factor screening like Blood Pressure Measurement, Cholesterol and Glucose Screening, Body Mass Index Recording and Interpretation and Oral Health Services.
During his speech, Dr. Eduardo S. Posadas, City Health Officer of San Fernando City, stated that in the past 5 years, pneumonia has become the number 1 cause of death in the City of San Fernando, La Union, followed by Heart and Renal diseases and Cancer, which are all forms of non-communicable disease (NCD).
In its efforts to curb the rising number of deaths related to NCD, Dr. Posadas relayed the message of the City Mayor that the City Government is strengthening its NCD programs through vigorous campaigning to promote and adopt wellness activities in various local and national government agencies, in partnership with the City Health Office and Department of Health Region 1. Furthermore, as part of the intensified campaign, he also laid out the City Government and Health Office’s main strategy that is already being carried out: door-to-door/house-to-house delivery of health services.
Other speeches and messages were delivered by key officials in the city supporting the advocacy of a healthier lifestyle. END
