09 March 2018 MANILA - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in partnership with the Philippines, conducted a “Training Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy for the Asia Pacific Region” in Manila on 05-09 March 2018. The event is the second Regional Training Programme for diplomats of the Asia-Pacific Region organized by UNITAR in the field of peacemaking and preventive diplomacy.  The first similar training was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR in 2016. With funding support from the governments of Canada, Malaysia, and the UN Department of Political Affairs, UNITAR was able to bring in international experts on the subject, as well as participants from ASEAN member states and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The five-day programme was an opportunity for the subject-matter experts to impart current approaches and methodologies on peacemaking and preventive diplomacy. It was also a platform for participants and experts to interact with each other in learning of new perspectives, experiences and insights on the topic. During the opening ceremony held on day-one of the event, DFA Senior Special Assistant Alex V. Lamadrid underlined the relevance and timeliness of the activity and enjoined the participants to fully benefit from their engagement with subject-matter experts and the other delegates on a very relevant topic.
