08 April 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs has advised Filipinos in Germany to be vigilant after at least three people were reported to have been killed and dozens injured after a vehicle plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in the northern part of the country.
The DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Berlin is checking with authorities whether there were Filipinos among the dead and injured in the incident that took place in the city of Munster in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, about 475 kilometers from Berlin.
Embassy Chargè d’Affaires Lilibeth Pono said around 4,100 of the 22,500 Filipinos in Germany are in North Rhine-Westphalia.
She said the Embassy has also requested the Philippine Honorary Consul in Essen, Heinz-Peter Heidrich, to assist in coordinating with police authorities in Munster.
Initial reports from Chargé d’Affaires Pono said that a van rammed into a crowd of pedestrians on Saturday afternoon (Saturday evening in Manila), killing at least three and injuring dozens. The driver of the van was reported to have been killed.
Chargé d’Affaires Pono said members of the Filipino Community should contact the Embassy if there are Filipinos among the casualties in the incident.
