MANILA 26 April 2018 – DFA-ASEAN officials went to four universities in Metro Manila from April 16 – 19, 2018 to educate students on ASEAN— its history, vision, ongoing initiatives and activities, and other regional updates. Participating universities include the Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University-Araneta, Malayan Colleges Laguna, and Mapua University.

The ASEAN awareness activity was conducted by DFA-ASEAN in preparation for this year’s ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ADSE) Competition – a regional data analytics competition that aims to gather innovative ideas to help attain the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

The ADSE Competition, which will be held on the third quarter of 2018 in Singapore, aims to engage the ASEAN youths in community-building efforts through the use of technology, in support of the human capital development strategic thrust of the ASEAN Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Masterplan 2020.

As part of the preparatory phase, Filipino students interested to join the competition participated in the ADSE Enablement Sessions and were oriented on ASEAN and on start-up of social enterprises. Students also underwent training on SAP Analytics Cloud, the software to be used in the competition.

This year’s competition has the theme “Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s World,” and is organized by the ASEAN Foundation, in partnership with SAP, a German-based European multinational software corporation that produces enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations.

The ASEAN Foundation, based in Jakarta, Indonesia, was established following the ASEAN Leaders’ agreement for its creation on 15 December 1997 in Kuala Lumpur. It has the mandate to promote greater awareness of ASEAN, greater interaction among the peoples of ASEAN and their wider participation in regional activities to contribute to ASEAN’s progress. END
