PH Consulate in Jeddah Assisting Filipino Nurse Stabbed While on Duty in Saudi Hospital
20 May 2018 — A Filipino nurse in Saudi Arabia is now in stable condition a few days after he was attacked and stabbed multiple times by a Saudi national for still unknown reasons.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said the suspect is now in police custody for stabbing and seriously wounding the victim whom the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah identified as Rolando Mina, a 29-year-old emergency room nurse from Caloocan city.
The DFA said the Consulate General immediately dispatched case officers to Madinah to provide assistance to Mina and to coordinate with local authorities who are handling his case.
Consul General Edgar Badajos said Mina was on duty when he was suddenly attacked by the 22-year-old Saudi national who was arrested shortly after the incident. He said the case has already been endorsed to the Public Prosecutor for further investigation.
Consul General Badajos said Mina sustained multiple stab wounds, mostly on his arms, with the entire incident captured by the hospital’s closed circuit television system.
Consul General Badajos said authorities are still trying to determine the motive for the attack as Mina said he does not know the suspect and has no idea why he stabbed him.
Consul General said officials from the Saudi Ministry of Health visited Mina on Friday and the hospital management provided him with a security guard to ensure his safety while the case is being investigated. They also assured him of assistance, including payment of his salary while he recovers. END
