PH Condoles with Belgium after 3 Killed in Suspected Terror Attack
29 May 2018 — The Philippines tonight expressed its sympathies to Belgium after three persons were killed and two others wounded on Tuesday in what authorities are investigating as a possible terror attack.
“We condole with the Government of Belgium and the Belgian people and stand in solidarity with them,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano said shortly after he was informed of the incident.
The Philippine Embassy in Brussels, which has been monitoring the incident, said no Filipinos were among the casualties in the incident which took place in Liège, about 100 kilometers south of the Belgian capital.
In his report to Secretary Cayetano, Ambassador Eduardo Jose de Vega said two police officers and a bystander were killed in the incident that also left two other police officers wounded.
Ambassador de Vega said a man carrying a knife attacked two female police officers from behind, took their guns and fired at a young man in his car. He then took a woman hostage before he was shot and killed by responding police officers.
Ambassador de Vega said there are around 8,000 Filipinos in Belgium, including about 100 in Liege. END
