DFA Tacloban Spearheads ASEAN Seminar with HRM Students

TACLOBAN 27 July 2018 — Representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs Consular Office (CO) in Tacloban City served as a resource speaker at the Fifth Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Technology (BSHRT) Summer Seminar-Workshop 2018, held on 09 July 2018 at Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU).

CO Tacloban was represented by Karen B. Terado, CO Consular Processing Head, ASEAN Focal Person, and Acting Public Relations Officer.

The seminar-workshop, attended by 80 sophomore BSHRT students, includes relevant topics focused on the development of young hospitality professionals as an important sector of the working population, and a catalyst for economic development.

In particular, CO Tacloban provided an overview on the ASEAN equipping participants with knowledge and insights about the ASEAN Community.

The presentation started with a quiz to gauge participant’s basic knowledge about ASEAN, followed by discussion of subject matters such as ASEAN history, the three pillars of the ASEAN Community, the Philippines’ 2017 Chairmanship of ASEAN, and the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2016-2020, which was designed to empower students to become competitive and active movers in the ASEAN arena.

Throughout the program, participants were engaged in discourses to help them identify valuable opportunities and challenges as future hospitality and tourism professionals within the ASEAN Community.

Also present during the event are key officials from EVSU’s College of Technology, Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Office of the University President, who all shared their appreciation for the conduct of the seminar-workshop in providing an avenue to gain necessary information on ASEAN, focusing on student’s employability and competency enhancement.
