DFA Extends Condolences to Indonesia after Another Quake Hits Lombok

06 August 2018 — The Department of Foreign Affairs today extended its sympathies to Indonesia in the wake of another earthquake that struck the island of Lombok and left at least 82 people dead and hundreds injured.

"We extend our condolences to the families of those who perished and hope that those affected would be able to rebuild their lives after this incident,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano said in a statement.

"We also ask our nationals in the area who may have been affected to contact the Embassy if they require assistance," the Secretary added.

Initial reports received by the Home Office from the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta said there were no indications that any of the 250 members of the Filipino Community in Lombok and surrounding areas were among the dead and injured in the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Lombok on Sunday.

According to Ambassador to Jakarta Leehiong Wee, a seven-member Philippine delegation attending a meeting in Lombok are also safe and are expected to be evacuated from the island.

The temblor came a week after the same area was hit by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that left 17 dead.

Ambassador Wee said the tremor was also felt in nearby Bali and have triggered a tsunami alert which was later lifted. END
