DFA Monitoring Mass Shooting Incident In Florida That Left 3 Dead, 11 Wounded
27 August 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is checking on the situation of the Filipino Community in Jacksonville Landing, Florida, after a mass shooting there on Sunday left at least three people dead and 11 wounded.
The DFA, through the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., expressed its condolences to the families of the victims in the shooting incident, which took place at a video game tournament.
Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez has reported the incident to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano and informed him that authorities are still in the process of identifying the victims.
According to Ambassador Romualdez, Honorary Consul Henry Howard of the Philippine Consulate in Miami has reported that so far he has not received any report of Filipino casualties.
Based on available data, there are an estimated 13,700 members of the Filipino Community in Florida’s 4th Congressional District, which includes Jacksonville.
Authorities said the gunman opened fire inside a gaming bar where the tournament was being held, killing two and wounding 11 others before he shot and killed himself.
The motive behind the shooting is still being investigated. END
