On Assistance to Typhoon-Affected Filipinos in the Marianas
03 November 2018 — In addition to Filipinos in Saipan, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will also be assisting Filipinos in other parts of the Northern Marianas who were also adversely affected by Typhoon Yutu (Rosita) when it swept through the islands early in the week.
The Department will be sending teams from the Philippine Consulate General in Agana to the islands of Tinian and Rota, which were also devastated by the typhoon. There are an estimated 600 Filipinos in Tinian and another 300 in Rota.
A two-man team from the Consulate has been on the ground in Saipan since Thursday to look into the situation of the 15,000 Filipinos there and to extend relief assistance.
Consul General Marciano R. De Borja said that Vice Consul Alex O. Vallespin and Assistance to Nationals (ATN) Officer Juliet S. Simbul have distributed relief assistance to at least 600 Filipinos, including those staying in temporary shelters after their homes were destroyed or damaged by the typhoon.
Consul General De Borja also extended the Department’s appreciation to authorities in Saipan for the assistance extended to affected members of the Filipino Community there. He also
acknowledged the financial assistance extended by hotel owner Jerry Tan which was also distributed among the affected Filipinos. END
