PH Entries Win APEC 2018 Photo Contest

First Prize: Weave to the Web by Danilo Victoriano

MANILA 23 November 2018 — Photographers from the Philippines dominated the APEC 2018 Photo Contest conducted by host economy Papua New Guinea.

Danilo Victoriano won the First Prize for his photo entitled “Weave to the Webs,” while Glen Campanilla won both Second Prize and the Popular Choice Award for a monochromatic take in his piece called “Doors to the World”.

Third Prize went to SeongJoon Cho from South Korea for his work entitled “The Urban Connectivity”. 

Meanwhile, the entry of Klienne Eco entitled “The Wind Farm That Creates Jobs for Locals” was propelled by online votes to win the Instagram Influencer Prize.

The Influencer Award is given to the photo entry submitted to APEC’s Instagram account by tagging the photo to @APEC by using the hashtag #APECPhotoContest and one of the priorities hashtags: #Connectivity, #Sustainability, #RegionalIntegration, #InclusiveGrowth, and #DigitalFuture. The Popular Choice Award is determined by the public, where the winner is awarded to the photo which received the most likes.

The winners were announced by APEC Papua New Guinea Senior Official Ivan Pomelau during the Concluding Meeting of Senior Official of APEC in Port Moresby on 13 November 2018. Philippines APEC Secretariat led by Senior Officials Leo Herrera-Lim and Director Anne Claire Cabochan welcomed the announcement of all the winners.

The APEC Photo Contest is an annual initiative to collect stakeholders’ views on APEC’s messages and priorities. The contest seeks the public’s visual interpretation of APEC’s priorities for 2018 including promoting sustainable and inclusive growth, deepening regional integration and improving connectivity, and strengthening inclusive growth through structural reform.

The Secretariat further disclosed that the winners were evaluated by a judging panel consisting of world renowned photojournalists, industry experts, and senior public officials including APEC Executive Director Alan Bollard, Agence France-Presse Photo Editor for North America Eric Baradat, award-winning photographer Palani Mohan, Papua New Guinea-based photographer Rocky Roe, and Mr. Pomaleu.

In its eighth year, the APEC Photo Contest 2018 received 1,347 entries from various APEC member economies including Brunei Darussalam, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, The Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and Viet Nam.
