At the margins of the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM), Post Ministerial Conferences (PMCs) and Related Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. co-led the ceremony launching the ASEAN-China Young Leaders’ Scholarship (ACYLS) with Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councilor Wang Yi on 31 July 2019.

The ceremony was attended by all ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretary-General.

In his remarks, Secretary Locsin underscored that the program will strengthen academic innovation and encourage more exchanges for mutual understanding between ASEAN and China. He also looked forward to seeing more applications to this program.

The ACYLS is an initiative in response to the call of the Leaders of the ASEAN Member States and China to strengthen educational cooperation and enhance mutual understanding and people-to-people ties between China and ASEAN. The program was initially announced by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at the 21st ASEAN-China Summit in November 2018 in Singapore.

The scholarship will provide support to ASEAN nationals, particularly young and promising leaders with work experience, to study for Master’s or doctoral degrees, undertake short-term (6 months) research programs, and participate in training courses focusing on specific areas, in top Chinese universities.

By offering various academic opportunities to ASEAN nationals to study in top Chinese universities, the scholarship will contribute significantly to the ASEAN community building efforts and forge a deep bond of friendship and amity between China and ASEAN towards a closer community of a shared future.
