PASAY CITY, 28 MAY 2021 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), led by the Office of Treaties of Legal Affairs (OTLA), in partnership with the Australian National Center for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), Australia Awards, and the Australian Embassy in the Philippines, conducted the fifth installment of the two-week Law of the Sea Course for government agencies via online delivery on 17-28 May 2021.
The course is an in-depth look at the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), its history and development, the maritime jurisdictional zones, relevant state practice, and other aspects of international maritime law including the marine environment, marine scientific research and settlement of disputes, including the 2016 South China Sea Arbitration case.
Since 2017, the DFA and its Australian partners have been conducting the Law of the Sea Course and has generated 306 participants covering over 20 national government agencies. While prior courses were delivered in the usual classroom setting, this is the second online delivery of the ANCORS course to accommodate the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. END
