AICHR Philippines Emphasizes Cooperation with Stakeholders Towards Effective Human Rights Advocacies

MANILA 15 September 2021 – Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Jaime Victor B. Ledda, who serves as ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Representative, emphasized the importance of a common understanding and collaboration with different stakeholders towards effective human rights advocacies during Day 2 of Regional Dialogue: Self-Assessment of AICHR Progress After 10 Years held on 14 September 2021 via videoconference.
“Amid efforts to uphold the voices of the peoples of ASEAN, little by little, we are recognizing the importance of having a common understanding and improved collaboration with different stakeholders towards a more effective and encompassing implementation of our human rights advocacies,” said Assistant Secretary Ledda.
Assistant Secretary Ledda chaired and moderated Session 2B on Evolution of AICHR as a Regional Human Rights Mechanisms: Strengths and Weaknesses of the Existing Mandate and Structure - the views from stakeholders.
The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) met with representatives from ASEAN Sectoral Bodies, regional, and international human rights organizations, and civil society organizations to discuss ways to further enhance the mandates of AICHR.
The Day 2 Regional Dialogue was a follow-up to the Day 1 Regional Dialogue held last 23 July 2021 where former and current AICHR Representatives discussed the evolution of AICHR as a human rights body in the ASEAN. The recommendations shared during Day 1 and Day 2 of the Regional Dialogues will be collected and circulated for the consideration and action of AICHR. END
