MANILA, 18 November 2021 – The Philippines and Bangladesh aims to further scale up its bilateral relations as the two countries commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties next year. This was agreed during the courtesy call on Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs Nathaniel G. Imperial by Bangladeshi Ambassador-designate F.M. Borhan Uddin on 09 November 2021 at the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Events and programs for the commemoration will be organized in coordination with the Bangladesh Embassy in Manila and the Philippine Embassy in Dhaka.
The two countries established bilateral relations on 24 February 1972, with the Philippines among the first countries to recognize Bangladesh as an independent state.
During the courtesy call, Assistant Secretary Imperial also expressed hope that with the upcoming anniversary of bilateral relations, there would also be significant steps on establishing partnerships on economic, labor, and people-to-people engagement. For his part, Ambassador-designate Uddin praised the skills of Filipino overseas workers and the value and care given to them by the Philippine government. Bangladesh hopes to learn from the Philippines on its policies on labor migration and assisting its nationals.
Ambassador-designate Uddin arrived in Manila on 17 October 2021, and will be presenting his credentials to President Rodrigo Duterte. END
