MANILA 19 July 2022 – The Department of Foreign Affairs welcomed delegates from ASEAN Member States for a Workshop on the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes and Maritime Boundary Delimitation, held on 12-14 July 2022 in Manila.
The workshop was co-organized by the DFA’s Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office and the Office of ASEAN Affairs, together with the Max Planck Foundation (MPF) for International Peace and the Rule of Law, under the latter’s ASEAN Cooperation Project.
The workshop focused on two major themes of peaceful dispute resolution: dispute settlement mechanisms under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and maritime boundary delimitation procedure. Participants from ASEAN member states represented their foreign and justice ministries, as well as agencies covering maritime issues.
In her opening remarks, Assistant Secretary for Maritime and Ocean Affairs Maria Angela A. Ponce noted that the 2016 South China Sea Arbitration Award, whose 6th anniversary was on July 12, is a demonstration of the Philippines’ commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes through UNCLOS.
Ambassador to the Philippines of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Anke Reiffenstuel, in her remarks, also highlighted the contribution of the 2016 Award to the rule of law in the South China Sea. END
