PASAY CITY, 25 November 2022 — Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for International Economic Relations Gina Alagon Jamoralin attended the “Filipino Barong – Wastra Indonesia: Threads and Patterns of Kinship” Fashion Show on 21 November 2022, co-organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) of the Republic of the Philippines and the Embassy of Republic of Indonesia in Manila, in partnership with The Metropolitan Theater (MET).
The project is the first initiative implemented under the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation between NCCA and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. The show hopes to serve as a precedent for a strengthened relationship between the Philippines and Indonesia, which marks 73 years this 2022.
The event showcased the works of some of the best designers from the Philippines and Indonesia: Steve de Leon, Didi Budiardjo, Novita Yunus, and Fredy Mercado. Pop-up stores for Onesimus Barongs and Indonesian Batik were also opened during the event.
The event placed a spotlight on how the Philippine Barong and Indonesian traditional clothes, including the famous Batik, are linked to heritage and culture and how the thread and patterns of the clothes are woven into Philippine and Indonesian history and kinship. END
