Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Jamoralin Highlights Science Diplomacy during National S&T Week

Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for the Office of International Economic Relations (OIER) Gina Alagon Jamoralin delivers her speech on Moving Forward with Science Diplomacy.

PASAY, 06 December 2022 — Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for the Office of International Economic Relations (OIER) Gina Alagon Jamoralin spoke about Science Diplomacy at the National S&T Week: Science for International Cooperation Forum organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on 24 November 2022.

The Science for International Cooperation Forum was organized to highlight international partnerships which have led to Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) programs and activities benefiting communities and the country. It was one of the many activities held as part of the 2022 National S&T Week.

Assistant Secretary Jamoralin spoke on the topic “Moving Forward with Science Diplomacy”. She highlighted the country’s active participation in different bilateral and multilateral fora which advance STI.

She also presented the work of the Foreign Service Posts in international institutions and conventions promoting STI, including among others, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Group of 77 (G77), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Biological Weapons Conventions (BWC), the Basel

Convention, the Rotterdam Convention, the Stockholm Convention, and the Minamata Convention.

“The Department endeavors to actively contribute and engage in shaping international S&T norms including in issues like disarmament/non-proliferation, intellectual property, maritime concerns, climate action, ethics, equitable use of genetic resources, sustainable development, cybersecurity, and south-south cooperation,” she stated in her speech.

Assistant Secretary Jamoralin and DOST Undersecretary for R&D Dr. Leah Buendia were joined as resource speakers by Dr. Jaime Montoya, Executive Director of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), Dr. Esperanza Cayanan from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA), and officials from the British and Japanese Embassies in Manila.

DOST scholars were also interviewed regarding their experiences on how international collaboration has helped them deepen their knowledge in their research fields.

The National S&T Week was held from 23 to 27 November 2022 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. END
