Philippines Launches IPEF Pillar II Supply Chains Early Harvest Along with Other IPEF Parties at IPEF Ministerial Meeting

DETROIT 05 June 2023 – Philippine delegation led by Secretary of Trade and Industry Alfredo E. Pascual and Philippines’ Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Senior Official Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and International Economic Relations Carlos D. Sorreta participated in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial Meeting and Chief Negotiators’ Meeting held on 26 – 27 May 2023 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The meetings were chaired by US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. All IPEF Member Parties participated.
Upon the conclusion of the meetings, IPEF Parties launched a Statement on the Substantial Conclusion of IPEF Supply Chain Agreement Negotiations. This agreement aims to provide a framework to build their collective understanding of significant supply chain risks, improve crisis coordination and response to supply chain disruptions, ensure that workers and the businesses, especially micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), in the economies of IPEF partners benefit from resilient, robust, and efficient supply chains, better prepare businesses in the economies of the IPEF partners to identify, manage, and resolve supply chain bottlenecks, facilitate cooperation, mobilize investments, and promote regulatory transparency in sectors and goods critical to national security, public health and safety, or the prevention of significant or widespread economic disruptions, among many others. Discussions during the Ministerial Meeting focused around how to implement the agreement to create prosperous outcomes for the Indo-Pacific region.
Parties also issued a Joint Statement for the Trade Pillar, Clean Economy Pillar, and Fair Economy Pillar which outlines the ambitions, objectives, and progress of negotiations in the remaining IPEF Pillars, as well as directions moving forward.
IPEF is composed of the Philippines, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United States, and Viet Nam.
