Philippines to Hold Symposium of Human Rights Experts to Commemorate UDHR75

MANILA 10 December 2023 – Today marks the 75th Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

To commemorate the event, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in partnership with the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, will be holding a symposium of human rights experts at the UP Theater on 12 December 2023.

According to Assistant Secretary Maria Teresa Almojuela of the DFA-Office of the United Nations and International Organizations (UNIO), the event will explore the rich legacy of the Philippines in shaping the international human rights framework and discuss the historical context of the Philippines' role in the drafting of the UDHR.  It will also provide a platform for discussion, networking, and collaboration for a diverse range of stakeholders including scholars, policymakers, diplomatic corps, civil society and think tanks.

“As one of the founding members of the United Nations, our nation’s commitment to human rights has been steadfast and unwavering”, said Assistant Secretary Almojuela.

“The symposium will not only focus on the rich legacy of the Philippines on the UDHR and international human rights framework, but also on efforts to institutionalize the UDHR through CHR and AICHR.  It will also highlight the role of the academe and civil society organizations as advocates and partners for the UDHR”, added the Assistant Secretary.

The DFA invites the UP community, Philippine government agencies, civil society, and members of the diplomatic corps, to participate in the symposium and take part in the historic event of 75 years of promoting and protecting human rights. END
