Philippines Leads Review of ASEAN-Australia Political Security Cooperation at 36th ASEAN-Australia Forum
DFA Assistant Secretary and ASEAN-Philippines Director-General Daniel R. Espiritu leads the discussion on ASEAN-Australia cooperation on the Political Security Pillar.
MELBOURNE 13 February 2024 – The Philippines led discussions on ASEAN-Australia Political-Security Cooperation during the 36th ASEAN-Australia Forum held in Melbourne, Australia. DFA Assistant Secretary and ASEAN-Philippines Director-General Daniel R. Espiritu, representing Undersecretary and ASEAN SOM Leader Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, emphasized the importance of Australia’s contributions on defense, security, cyber cooperation, and transnational crime.
“ASEAN continues to view Australia as a valuable partner in safeguarding peace, security and stability in the region”, said Assistant Secretary Espiritu.
ASEAN Member States and Australia look forward to the Special Summit to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations scheduled on 4-6 March 2024.
Australia holds the distinction of being ASEAN's oldest dialogue partner, having established formal relations in 1974. END
