MANILA 05 June 2024 - The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) held this month’s Ambassadors’ Lecture Series with the topic of Philippines-Mexico Relations: Opportunities and Challenges on 24 May 2024 at the Carlos P. Romulo Library. Ambassador Daniel Hernández Joseph of the Embassy of Mexico was the featured speaker.
The Ambassador highlighted a new perspective in the Philippines-Mexico Relations, transcending the geographic distance between the two countries. Through his lecture, he presented the similarities of both countries, reflecting the closer and more direct relationship that has existed as early as 450 years ago during the Galleon Trade.
The participants were presented with a holistic review by Amb. Hernandez on the status of bilateral relations between the Philippines and Mexico. He discussed the similarities of the two countries not only through its shared history but also in cultural and economic cooperation that continues even to this day.
The shared values of the Philippines and Mexico are also reflected in their common positions, such as the continued existence of a rules-based international order, the peaceful resolution of conflict, international cooperation, and nuclear non-proliferation. There is also the mutual experience of both countries’ consular services as a comprehensive suite of assistance to their respective nationals.
The lecture concluded with the hope for closer cultural cooperation, through the celebration of the history of the Galleon Trade. Ambassador Hernández also recommended increasing trade between the Philippines and Mexico by exploring possible synergies in supply chains and through existing regional mechanisms.
The Ambassadors’ Lecture Series (ALS) is a platform provided to the heads of diplomatic missions in the Philippines to share their knowledge, expertise, and advocacies in promoting bilateral relationship with the Philippines.
