Turkish Envoy Defines Turkiye’s Foreign Policy at FSI’s Ambassador Lecture Series

Ambassador Niyazi Evren Akyol is FSI’s guest lecturer for this month’s Ambassadors’ Lecture Series.

PASAY 17 July 2024 – The Turkish Ambassador to the Philippines, Ambassador Niyazi Evren Akyol, gave a lecture on Turkiye’s foreign and defense policy at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) on 25 June 2024, as part of FSI’s Ambassadors’ Lecture Series.

During his lecture, Ambassador Akyol discussed the enterprising and humanitarian character of current Turkish foreign policy, highlighting the need to have a balanced and comprehensive view of global political developments.

When asked about further defense cooperation with the Philippines, the Ambassador informed that Turkiye is in a good position to provide Manila with naval assets that suit its security requirements, specifically pitching Turkish corvettes and patrol vessels. 

“We have one of the largest shipbuilding infrastructure in the world...Naval platforms are a very fertile ground for defense industry cooperation with the Philippines...We’ll see if our package will prove to be attractive enough for the needs of the Philippine Navy and the Coast Guard,” Ambassador Akyol said. 

The Ambassadors’ Lecture Series (ALS) is a regular initiative of the FSI, the training and research arm of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), to provide a platform for ambassadors based in the Philippines to voice their advocacies and insights on relevant issues. 

FSI is the training and research office of DFA, which was created under P.D. No. 1060 and expanded under R.A. No. 7157. The FSI Board is chaired by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs with the Chairperson of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the Director General of FSI, the President of the University of the Philippines (UP), and the President of the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) as members. 

Personnel of the Foreign Service Institute, Department of Foreign Affairs, members of the diplomatic corps, academe, and media attended the event.
