PASAY 31 July 2024 – In commemoration of Apolinario Mabini’s 160th birthday, the Department of Foreign Affairs-Office of Cultural Diplomacy (OCD) organized a special lecture titled “Apolinario Mabini: Conscience of the First Republic” by professor and historian Dr. Ambeth R. Ocampo on 23 July 2024 at the Bulwagang Apolinario Mabini, of the Department of Foreign Affairs. This lecture is part of the Heritage Talks Lecture series organized by OCD. In particular, the event aimed to highlight Mabini's pivotal role in the Philippine Revolution and his legacy as a key figure in establishing the First Philippine Republic and the country’s First Foreign Secretary.
Dr. Ocampo's lecture provided insights into Mabini's contributions, emphasizing his intellectual and moral influence on the country's early political landscape. He highlighted Mabini's crucial role as the "brains of the revolution" and his steadfast commitment to the principles of liberty and governance. Dr. Ocampo delved into Mabini's writings and policies, illustrating how they shaped the nascent republic and continue to inspire contemporary political thought. He also debunked some misconceptions regarding Mabini by providing a more nuanced understanding of his life and legacy.
Despite the inclement weather brought on by typhoon “Carina”, the event was attended by members from the Diplomatic Corps, representatives from the Pasay City Government, professors, students from different universities, and DFA personnel. The event was also live-streamed on the DFA’s official FaceBook page and was watched by the different Foreign Service Posts (FSPs) and the public. After the event, a book signing session with Dr. Ocampo was held. END
