MANILA 16 September 2024 – The Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo and Madame Pamela Louise Manalo, through the Office of Cultural Diplomacy (DFA-OCD), successfully hosted a captivating concert titled "Harmonies of Heritage: A Symphony of Philippine Colonial Music" last 10 September 2024.

The concert took place in the historic San Agustin Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Baroque Churches), which is also celebrating its milestone 420th year since its construction. The centuries-old structure, steeped in Philippine history, echoed with the timeless melodies of colonial music, offering a moving tribute to the nation’s rich musical heritage as the past and present blended seamlessly within its sacred walls.

In his opening remarks, Secretary Manalo highlighted the profound ability of music to reconnect us with our heritage, stating, "Through music, we express our deepest emotions, share our stories, and link with our history." He emphasized the role of music as a vital conduit to the nation's cultural legacy, bridging the past and present in ways that resonate with all Filipinos.

Meanwhile, DFA Assistant Secretary for Cultural Diplomacy Celia Anna M. Feria underscored the global impact of cultural expressions, particularly music, in building international connections. "Music transcends borders, touches hearts, and unites us as a global community. The harmonies we hear tonight are not mere echoes of the past; they are calls to the future - where culture continues to serve as a powerful force for unity, understanding, and peace," she remarked.

The Manila Symphony Orchestra delivered a stunning and historical performance of nine colonial-era pieces, meticulously researched by experts Dr. Sandy Chua, Maestro Jeffrey Solares, and Mr. Earvin Bibal. Their interpretations breathed new life into these historic compositions, showcasing the intricate harmonies, rhythmic patterns, and melodic styles that defined the colonial period. The repertoire performed by the orchestra, some of which were accompanied by the Manila Symphony Chorus and soloists, provided a unique glimpse into the diverse musical influences that shaped the Philippines during this era.

The concert not only celebrated the richness of Philippine colonial music but also underscored the importance of preserving and promoting these timeless compositions. The musicians’ masterful renditions honored our musical heritage and brought this back into the spotlight.

Audiences may rewatch the concert on the DFA's official Facebook page. Additionally, the concert tracks will soon be available for streaming on Spotify and YouTube Music, allowing listeners to enjoy the rich sounds of our colonial past. END
