FSI Launches Policies and Guidelines on AI Use

MANILA 14 November 2024 – After conducting an in-house survey on artificial intelligence utilization among its personnel, the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) noted the integration of AI in various tasks performed by its personnel. Consequently, FSI adopted new policies and guidelines to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI in its operations.

These policies provide a framework for AI utility within the organization. They prioritize ethical considerations upholding data privacy and intellectual property and ensuring that AI serves to complement human judgment rather than replace it.

FSI Director General Francisco Noel R. Fernandez III recognizes the importance in the establishment of these AI policies and guidelines. “By embracing AI responsibly, we can enhance our capabilities in FSI and better serve our nation in a rapidly changing global landscape," he said.

This initiative aims to keep FSI aligned with rapidly evolving technological advancements, particularly in AI. As the think tank and diplomatic academy of the Department of Foreign Affairs, it is integral for FSI to establish this framework to maintain the highest standards of intellectual integrity and professionalism.

In developing the guidelines, employees were consulted through a participatory approach to foster ownership, incorporate individual practices, and address the organization’s needs.

The release coincides with the observance of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, emphasizing the significance of enhancing security measures in the digital age.

To date, FSI is only one of a few national government agencies which have adopted policies and guidelines on AI. END
