Philippines Advocates Innovation and Cooperation at 2025 APEC SOM1 in Gyeongju, Korea

SEOUL 14 March 2025 – From 24 February to 09 March 2025, the Philippines participated in the 1st Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM1) and Related Meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea. Led by Undersecretary Charles C. Jose, the Philippine delegation engaged in discussions on human resource development, telecommunications and artificial intelligence, finance, as well as economic and technical cooperation initiatives. Undersecretary Jose underscored the country's commitment to regional cooperation and its role in contributing to the collective goals of APEC.
The delegation received coordination and logistical support from the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, led by Ambassador Maria Theresa B. Dizon-De Vega, enabling effective participation in the meetings and related events.
While supporting Korea's theme and priorities for APEC 2025, “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper,” the Philippines pushed the implementation of the Lima Roadmap to promote the Transition to the Formal and Global Economies, which aims, among others, to develop a skilled workforce through inclusive access to education, capacity building, and employment. Additionally, the Philippines emphasized the development and adoption of emerging technologies such as AI, promoting sustainable tourism and forest management, and fostering public-private collaboration to empower MSMEs.
The outcomes of APEC SOM1 in Korea reflect the collective commitment of APEC member economies to building a sustainable and prosperous future for the Asia-Pacific region. The discussions and agreements reached during the meeting will serve as a foundation for continued cooperation and progress towards achieving the goals outlined in the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040. END
