Philippines and Grenada Establish Diplomatic Relations

MANILA 14 May 2025 — The Philippines and Grenada formally established diplomatic relations through a ceremony held on 08 May 2025 during the visit of Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo to St. Kitts and Nevis.

Secretary Manalo signed the Joint Communique along with Grenada Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Joseph Andall with the goal of promoting mutual understanding and strengthening the friendship and cooperation grounded on the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

The Philippines and Grenada have been pursuing cooperation in various multilateral fora for years. As members of several international organizations and parties to a number of United Nations Conventions, the two countries have continuously supported efforts to maintain peace and bring about sustainable development among its peoples. The formal establishment of diplomatic relations reinforces the friendly relations and reaffirms the commitment of both countries to take bilateral cooperation further.

In his remarks, Secretary Manalo highlighted the aspirations of the two sovereign nations to bring peace and prosperity to their peoples grounded on mutual respect. He added that Grenada has already met the Philippines through the Filipinos living and working in Grenada. He emphasized that the relations between the Philippines and Grenada have not only been about the two countries, and it has flourished amid the bigger family of nations.

Minister Andall underscored how the two countries are linked by sea - maritime, seafaring - and independent. He observed that although the Philippines achieved independence more than 75 years ahead of Grenada, what is important is how the countries are looking into the future, deepening the relationship across the multiple areas of collaboration. He remarked that in the midst of global turbulence, “the signing ceremony is a beacon on what is truly important”.

The agreement was signed in St. Kitts and Nevis during the historic visit of Secretary Manalo to the island nation in the Caribbean to participate in the 28th Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). END
