Secretary Manalo Reaffirms PH’s Commitment to the UN Charter in a Meeting with UN Secretary-General Guterres

NEW YORK 13 June 2025 – Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss Philippine priorities and areas of cooperation with the UN. Secretary Manalo reassured UNSG Guterres that the Philippines, as a founding member of the UN, is deeply committed to the UN Charter and the work of the UN. He emphasized the importance of multilateralism, international law, and the rules-based international order. 

UNSG Guterres expressed appreciation for the credible, valuable and positive contributions of the Philippines and confirmed the excellence of PH-UN relations. He thanked the Philippines for being a solid partner of the UN in peace and security, development, human rights and the environment. 

Secretary Manalo and UNSG Guterres discussed the paramount issue of climate change, as well as financing for development, peacekeeping, and the UN Security Council, among other matters. They looked forward to having innovative solutions to the shortfalls in financing climate adaptation and the loss and damage fund. They agreed that financing and investments are needed in the Philippines to address its climate vulnerability. 

UNSG Guterres conveyed his regards to President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr, and wished the Philippines a happy Independence Day. Secretary Manalo was accompanied by Amb. Antonio M. Lagdameo, Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN, and other officers of the Philippine Mission to the UN.  END
