Philippines Shares Ocean Literacy Strategies at Third United Nations Oceans Conference

NICE 13 June 2025 – The Philippines co-sponsored a high-level event entitled “Blue Education For A Sustainable And Resilient Society” held at the sidelines of the Third United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC3) on 09 June 2025, at the UNOC 3 Blue Zone in Nice, France.
DILG Undersecretary for Local Governments Marlo B. Iringan, as co-head of the Philippine Delegation to UNOC3, delivered remarks, sharing the Philippines’ multidimensional approach to ocean literacy. He emphasized that “the Philippines will not waver in its role as a champion for the oceans, and is determined in its advocacy for ocean literacy,” and called to strengthen the Philippines’ ocean literacy initiatives by increasing awareness and understanding, and rallying grassroots efforts.
Hosted by the UNESCO- Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC), the side event aimed to highlight progress in the area of ocean literacy by showcasing practices and exploring future developments in educational policies and programs. This will include a discussion that seeks to support the implementation of key commitments, such as the development of local and national blue education policies, as well as the promotion and replication of recognized best practices in ocean literacy and education worldwide.
The side event consisted of remarks from the UNESCO Director-General, the Presidents of France, Brazil, Cabo Verde and Portugal, and the Ministers of Environment of France and Sweden. END
