07 December 2015 – International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Yukiya Amano paid a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario this afternoon, December 07, at the Department of Foreign Affairs to discuss the Philippines’ role in the IAEA, particularly in the promotion and utilization of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Secretary Del Rosario lauded the strong partnership between the Philippines and the IAEA. Secretary Del Rosario discussed the further strengthening of the Philippines-IAEA technical cooperation as it serves as an essential vehicle for the transfer of nuclear technology in the areas of agriculture, industry, hydrology, environment, nuclear safety, application of isotopes and radiation, medicine and waste management. Director General Amano noted the possibility of harnessing the benefits of utilizing nuclear energy in support of the Philippines’ socio-economic development.
Director-General Amano delivered an inspirational message this morning at the opening session of the Third Philippine Nuclear Congress (PNC) with the theme “Meeting Challenges through Nuclear Science and Technology for Sustainable Development.” The Third PNC provides a forum wherein experts exchange information and review global, regional, and national scenarios in nuclear science and technology applications for technological development and inclusive growth.
Director-General Amano will conclude his visit with a meeting with the heads of Philippine educational institutions and then with the members of the Philippine Congress on December 08. END
