SFA Yasay Calls on Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the Sidelines of the 11th ASEM Summit in Mongolia on 15 July 2016

 

 

16 July 2016 – Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto R. Yasay conveyed President Rodrigo Duterte’s warm greetings to Prime Minister Abe. Secretary Yasay also expressed the Philippines’ sadness at the tragic events in Bangladesh that victimised Japanese nationals.  Both sides stated their shared commitment to fighting the scourge of terrorism. 

Secretary Yasay observed the very dynamic economic relationship of the two countries, where Japan remains the country’s top investor and top ODA donor, and stressed that it was important for Japan to be a partner in infrastructure and in agricultural development.

Prime Minister Abe recalled the progress in cooperative activities, through long-standing Japanese work in Mindanao.  He stated that Japan would like to see further development of relations under the new administration and the expansion of Japan’s work in Mindanao throughout the Philippines.

In exchanging views on the West Philippine Sea, Secretary Yasay thanked Japan for its strong support, and in this regard reiterated the President’s desire to always engage our allies.  He stated that the decision of the tribunal provides a legal basis to move forward, and the Philippine Government is currently studying the ruling very carefully.  He stated that the Philippine Constitution prohibits entering into any agreement that would compromise national interests and rights of Filipinos.  PM Abe stressed the importance of the rule of law and the need for peaceful means to resolve disputes.

The Philippines and Japan are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.

Secretary Yasay is leading the Philippine delegation to the 11th ASEM Summit in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia, from 15 to 16 July 2016. END
