ASEAN Flag Raised for the First Time in New York City

New York City Mayor Eric Adams leads the ASEAN flag raising.

NEW YORK 17 August 2023 – The ASEAN flag was raised for the first time in New York City, with the support of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, to commemorate the 56th ASEAN Founding Anniversary of its founding. Consuls General, Permanent Representatives, and community leaders of ASEAN nations were present to commemorate the milestone.

Mayor Adams, in his remarks, said that the flag raising highlights the importance of diversity and serves as a symbol of New York City’s strength, power, tolerance, and acceptance.

It was the Philippine Consulate General in New York which suggested to commemorate its anniversary and having an ASEAN flag-raising ceremony to show to the world that ASEAN is a strong, fast-growing, and influential region.

The Filipino community leaders present were the following: Steven Raga Assemblymember, New York State Assembly, Nora Galleros, CPA, CGMA, President, Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc., Rena O. Pedaria, President Association of Fil-Am Teachers of America, Inc. (AFTA), Janet R. Cuaycong, MS, BSN, RN, CCRN, President, Philippine Nurses Association of America, Inc. (New York Chapter), and Jay Cayabyab, Chapter Commander, Knights of Rizal (Astoria Chapter).
