NEW DELHI 15 August 2024 – Philippine crafts, jewelry and cuisine won big at the resoundingly successful ASEAN “Alley of ASEAN Wonders” BAZAAR organized by ASEAN diplomatic missions based in the Indian capital on 10 August 2024, with the support of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. The Bazaar took place at the sprawling grounds of the Indonesian Embassy, current holder of the ANDC’s rotating chairship.

Collaborating as the ASEAN New Delhi Committee (ANDC), the 10 ASEAN diplomatic missions  brought out for sale culinary and handicraft items representing the best of their respective cultures. Joining them to represent the host country was the Delhi Emporium, the state-run store of Indian saris, wood carvings, jewelry, leather goods, clothing and others. A huge throng of over 1,300 locals and expatriates enthusiastically snapped up merchandise and savored the myriad dishes on offer.

The Philippine Booth was a standout, seeing brisk business for the duration of the day-long event. A collaboration between the Philippine Embassy and entrepreneurs from the local Filipino Community, the booth proudly featured an array of traditional Filipino culinary treasures and native products.

The Philippines offered a gastronomic journey that included traditional Filipino breads and indulgent desserts such as maja blanca, biko, yema, puto, halo-halo, and a host of other beloved Filipino delicacies.

Also on showcase were exquisite Philippine freshwater pearls, handcrafted wine holders, weaves, tablecloths, and other decorative items.

The Bazaar was also the ANDC’s tribute to the 57th Founding Anniversary of ASEAN, which the ANDC marked with a flag-raising ceremony two days prior, on 08 August 2024, also at the Indonesian Embassy.

Beyond the anniversary, the Bazaar was in keeping with the ANDC’s constant efforts to elevate ASEAN’s profile in India and to promote public awareness and appreciation of the grouping in the host country.

The Philippines, which took over the role of coordinator of ASEAN-India relations last month from Singapore, participated in consonance with its support for these causes.

“The Philippine Embassy extends its gratitude to all who patronized the Philippine booth, and to our kababayan-entrepreneurs who showed the best of our cuisine, culture and heritage on this platform”,  said Ambassador Josel F. Ignacio. “Events like the ASEAN Bazaar not only promote ASEAN’s diverse cultural wealth, but also cements the bonds between ASEAN member states and India.  END
