11 August 2017 CAIRO – As part of the global celebrations to mark the 50th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the ASEAN Committee in Cairo (ACC) hosted a reception with Egyptian and other friends of the 10-nation bloc at the Conrad Cairo Hotel.

In his remarks, Ambassador Leslie J. Baja, representing the Philippines as current ASEAN Chair, attributed the ASEAN’s success to its founding principles of mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of its members.

“Through this distinct ASEAN way, our region, with all its promise, stands at the center of the future of the Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world,” he added.

Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Tarek Kabil, the event’s Guest of Honor, lauded ASEAN’s advancements particularly in education and economic development, examples that he said Egypt is looking to emulate. “In this, Egypt will benefit from your advice, count on your support, and together elevate our economic relationship for the next 50 years to come,” he remarked, addressing the ACC ambassadors.

Attendees at the event were treated to an assortment of ASEAN dishes prepared by the ACC embassies, as well as videos of the region’s diverse tourism offerings.

The ASEAN Committee in Cairo brings together the nine ASEAN embassies in Cairo – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – for regular engagements and activities promoting awareness of ASEAN in Egypt.
