ASEAN in Nairobi Celebrates 50th Founding Anniversary of ASEAN

11 August 2017 NAIROBI, KENYA — The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi celebrated the 50th founding anniversary of the ASEAN at the residence of the Ambassador of Indonesia on August 07. Indonesian Ambassador Soehardjono Sastromihardjo, as Chair of the ASEAN Nairobi Committee, graciously offered his residence as venue for the celebration.

Ambassador Sastromihardjo started the celebration by welcoming members of the ASEAN diplomatic corps based in Nairobi. Philippine Ambassador Uriel Norman R. Garibay spoke on behalf of the Philippine Chairmanship of ASEAN this year.

“With this year’s milestone commemoration of ASEAN’s Golden Anniversary, ASEAN has again proven itself to be the foundation on which our common aspirations for a people-centered and people-oriented community can be realized,” remarked Ambassador Garibay as he also mentioned the role of ASEAN Committees in Third Countries (ACTCs) in promoting ASEAN identity and interest all over the world.

After the formal part of the program, everyone partook of the various national dishes from the four participating countries. Among the dishes included were Pad Thai from Thailand, Laksa and Chicken Satay from Indonesia, Adobo and Pancit from the Philippines and black-pepper beef from Malaysia.
