RCO Tacloban Joins ASEAN 50th Anniversary Landmark Lighting

 08 August 2017 – RCO Tacloban joined the Landmark Lighting in the city of Tacloban and municipality of Palo, in celebration of the golden anniversary of the ASEAN, under the Philippines’ Chairmanship this year.

Held simultaneously with ASEAN Members States and other local government units in the country, the ceremony features the lighting of a lantern, symbolic of the emblems of ASEAN, 50 years to the day of the association’s founding on 08 August 2017 at 7PM. In Tacloban, lantern lighting was held in Kanhuraw Hill, and in Palo at the foot of McArthur Landing Monument.

Various parades commenced the celebration, attended by Government agencies, barangays, schools, and several civic organizations. Festivities featured vibrant and colourful traditional dresses and costumes of ASEAN countries and was followed by a commemorative program. During the program, the ASEAN Hymn was sung, and was followed by the hoisting of the flags of the 10 member states of the Association. 

The two lighting ceremonies were attended by the RCO’s Head of Office Dorotea B. Apostol and ASEAN Focal Person/Representative. One of the main highlights of the event was the DFA message delivered by the RCO, emphasizing the importance of ASEAN in promoting regional peace and progress, and the significance of the landmark lighting event to support ASEAN’s message of cooperation and unity in the region.

Local schools, artists, and dance groups showcased performances during the ceremonies, capped by a line-up of fireworks display. END
