14 June 2017 BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam led by Philippine Ambassador Meynardo LB. Montealegre, together with the members of the Filipino Community, held a Flag Raising ceremony on June 12 at the Embassy grounds, marking the 119th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence. The occasion was attended by close to 200 members of the Filipino Community.

Ambassador Montealegre was assisted by Col. Ernest Mark P. Rosal, Defense and Armed Forces Attaché (DAFA), and MSgt. Romelito A. Galeos, ODAFA Administrative Assistant, in hoisting the Philippine flag.

The Independence Day Messages of President Rodrigo R. Duterte, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano, Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana, and Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III were then read by Ambassador Montealegre, Consul Melvin C. Almonguera, Defense Attaché Col. Ernest Mark P. Rosal, and Labor Attaché Melissa C. Mendizabal, respectively.

The Ambassador also thanked the members of the Filipino Community for their continued support and cooperation with the Embassy. In line with this year’s theme of “Pagbabagong Sama-samang Balikatin,” the Ambassador called on them to unite for a collective commitment towards meaningful reforms, and to participate in bringing about inclusive development for a better Philippines. He likewise expressed his appreciation to the government of His Majesty the Sultan for the strong bond of friendship and affinity between the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam and the peoples of the two countries.

Following the ceremony, the exhibition on T’nalak fabrics, a textile produced by the T’bolis from South Cotabato, and other woven arts and crafts was opened to the Filipino Community and other guests. Also on display were exquisite mats (banig) which came from Bukidnon, Palawan, Samar, Tawi-Tawi, and other regions in the Philippines. The exhibit will run for a week until June 16 and will be open to Embassy clients for viewing.

It will be recalled that on May 21, the Philippine Embassy hosted a Cultural Show at the Embassy grounds as a kick-off activity for the Philippine Independence Day celebrations, and a diplomatic reception on May 23 at The Empire Hotel & Country Club in commemoration of the 119th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
