18 July 2017 CAIRO – The Philippine Embassy in Egypt marked the 119th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence with twin celebrations with the diplomatic corps and with the Filipino community in Cairo.

Philippine Ambassador to Cairo Leslie J. Baja paid tribute to the heroes that fought and continue to defend the country’s freedom and democracy at the Embassy’s diplomatic reception on July 05 at the Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah Hotel.

Ambassador Baja also highlighted the deepening relations between the Philippines and the five countries under the Embassy’s jurisdiction – Egypt, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan. He noted that in all five countries, the overseas Filipino play a major role in enhancing relations.

The celebration with the Filipino community at the Conrad Cairo Hotel on July 07 was a typical festive atmosphere with song and dance numbers, Filipino food, and raffles. The event was a joint effort of the Embassy and an organizing committee composed entirely of volunteers.

Ambassador Baja lauded the unity and solidarity of Filipinos in Egypt and expressed hope that the community would grow closer and stronger. There are close to 5,000 Filipinos living and working in Egypt.
