SYDNEY 26 June 2018 – In celebration of the 120th anniversary of Philippine independence, the Alliance of Philippine Community Organizations (APCO) organized the “Pista sa Nayon” featuring the artworks of Kublai Millan, a Mindanaoan artist from Davao, held at Sydney Olympic Park, New South Wales, Australia on 16 June 2018.

Millan was born in Cotabato City, and holds a degree of Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Diliman. His monuments have become important cultural landmarks in major towns and cities in Mindanao. His paintings depict pastoral scenes and the people in the region.

Millan’s exhibit in Sydney was launched for the benefit of the House of Hope Foundation for Kids with Cancer.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian, NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Ray Williams MP, NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley MP, attended the event with the members of the Filipino community of New South Wales.

In her speech, newly-installed Consul General Ma. Teresa L. Taguiang congratulated APCO for putting together the program for the “Pista sa Nayon,” and showcasing the artworks of Kublai and the musical performance by Mebuyan represented by Ms. Maan Chua.

Mebuyan is a 12-member, all women music theater group, performing Filipino folk and indigenous music traditions with contemporary music form. Mebuyans’s songs are mostly about children’s rights, ecology, peace, indigenous culture, and women issues.

Millan’s exhibit is part of the Philippine Culture and Arts Festival of the Philippine Embassy in Australia, in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney. END
