BUCHAREST 28 June 2018 – The Filipino Community in Romania (TFCR), the association of overseas Filipinos and Filipino workers in Romania, celebrated Philippine Independence Day at the compound of San Antonio de Padua Church in Bucharest on 17 June 2018.

The highly festive open-air event was attended by members of the Filipino Community, and their Romanian friends and employers.

Non-resident Philippine Ambassador to Romania Maria Fe T. Pangilinan was represented by Minister and Consul General Paul Vincent L. Uy.

Consul General Uy read the Independence Day message of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, while TFCR President Rouen Reyes delivered the opening remarks. Mr. Reyes sincerely acknowledged the presence of Embassy officials, especially after the closure of the resident embassy in 2012.

Connecting with the community by celebrating the most significant event in Philippine history, in addition to biannual consular outreach programs in Romania, shows the priority which the Embassy in Hungary places on the overseas Filipinos in Romania, and in other countries under its jurisdiction. There are 880 Filipinos living and working in Romania.

TFCR officers are elected every two years. The Philippine Embassy in Budapest maintains very close ties with TFCR, which is actually involved in assisting the Embassy in its consular activities, especially those pertaining to Assistance-to-Nationals cases.

Annual celebration of Philippine Independence is one of the highlights of TFCR’s year-round activities. The members tirelessly contribute their Sundays (day-off) to ensure a successful event.

This year, the TFCR men and women, representing various regions in the Philippines (Bicol, Ilocos, Iloilo, Visayas, Waray, and Pampanga), donned their Filipiniana attire with their happy cheerful faces as they proudly sang, danced, and competed in various contests.

To cap off the festivities, the special all-Filipino lunch was served and partaken a la “boodle fight” by all. END
