HONG KONG 05 July 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong led community-wide annual traditional festivities to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Philippine independence on the streets of Hong Kong’s famed Central District, a stone’s throw away from the HSBC Building, the Bank of China Tower, and other iconic architectural landmarks on 10 June 2018.

This year’s edition of the daylong Kapangyawan Friendship Festival, whose name is derived from the Cantonese word for friend which is “pang yao,” drew more than 5,000 spectators from the Filipino, local and expatriate communities to witness the colorful and lively parade, dazzling costumes, and impressive cultural presentations on Chater Road.

Filipino celebrities from Manila–Ronnie Alonte, Lassy, and Jason Dy–added glitter and laughter to the whole entertainment package.

As tribute to the Philippines-Hong Kong friendship, the Hong Kong Police Band also participated in the noontime street parade, which was preceded by an ecumenical prayer involving the main Christian and Muslim religious organizations, and a Catholic mass offered at the space between Chater House and Alexandra House, near the corner of Des Voeux Road.

The Consulate General collaborated with Global Alliance, Philippine Association of Hong Kong (PAHK), and Philippine Alliance (PA)—three of the biggest and highly regarded Filipino organizations in Hong Kong—to come up with a superb line-up of activities.

The Kapangywan Friendship Festival was supported by AirAsia, Prime Credit, Friends of the Philippine Foundation, TFC, Jollibee, PLTD-Smart, AFreight, SSS, Beam & Go, Metroland Realty, GoGo Baon, Metro Remittance Hong Kong Limited, and PNB, and participated in by around 90 Filipino Community organizations.
