“Pinoy Capital of U.S.” Celebrates PH Independence Day, Signs Spark*Connect*Empower Agreement

SAN FRANCISCO 05 July 2018 – The officers and staff of the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, led by Consul General Henry S. Bensurto Jr., joined Daly City officials and residents at a Philippine flag-raising ceremony in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the Philippine declaration of independence at the City Hall on 11 June 2018.
In attendance were the members of the Daly City Council, headed by Mayor Juslyn Manalo and Congresswoman Jackie Speier.
During the ceremony, Daly City Mayor Manalo, a Filipino-American, presented to Consul General Bensurto a proclamation declaring 11 June 2018 as Philippines Day in Daly City.
In presenting the proclamation, Mayor Manalo conveyed that the “City of Daly honors and values its Filipino and Filipino-American residents for having a strong commitment to family, service, faith and hard work; and recognizes the contributions Filipinos have made to enrich the diversity of our community.”
In his message, Consul General Bensurto praised the diversity of Daly City and stated the positive contributions that Filipinos and Filipino-Americans have made to the community. He also encouraged the public to connect the young Filipino-American generations to their Filipino roots and heritage conveying that only through recognition of Filipino identity can the Filipino-Americans have and continue to have a strong voice in their community.
At the ceremony, Mayor Manalo also signed the Spark*Connect*Empower Agreement signifying that Daly City is a partner of the Philippine Consulate General to Spark*Connect*Empower (SCE) the next generations of Filipinos, by moving them to fall in love with their Filipino heritage and culture, through various platforms and activities.
Daly City is dubbed as the Pinoy capital in the United States, having the highest concentration of Filipino population in the country. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Daly City has a total population of 101,123, 33.3 percent of which are Filipinos (33,649). END
