PH Embassy in Yangon Celebrates 121st Anniversary of Philippine Independence

YANGON 28 June 2019 – The Philippine Embassy in Yangon, led by Ambassador to Myanmar Eduardo E. Kapunan Jr., hosted the National Day Diplomatic Reception on 14 June 2019 and the Philippine Cultural Night on 15 June 2019 in celebration of the 121st Anniversary of Proclamation of Philippine Independence with the theme “Tapang ng Bayan, Malasakit sa Mamamayan (Courage of the Nation, Compassion for the People)” at the Sule Shangri-La Hotel in Yangon.

In his National Day Diplomatic Reception speech, Ambassador Kapunan said that Philippine Independence is celebrated annually to remind Filipinos of how far the Philippines has come as a nation. He also shared the recent developments in Philippines-Myanmar bilateral relations and also affirmed the continued support of the Philippine Government for Myanmar's endeavors in bringing about national reconciliation and peace to all communities throughout the country.

Guest of Honor Union Minister for Education Dr. Myo Thein Gyi acknowledged the shared values of the Philippines and Myanmar, and particularly lauded the continuous effort of the Embassy in strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries through programs in various sectors.

Guests at the reception had the opportunity to savor sumptuous Filipino cuisine such as chicken sotanghon, kilawing isda, minanok, lechon pork belly, beef kare-kare, inihaw na isda at ensaladang mangga, chiken inasal, guinataang kalabasa at sitaw, maja blanca, buko pandan and sapin-sapin, especially prepared by Pinoy Masterchef Romulo Royol, Jr.

In cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Embassy and, also successfully held the Philippine Cultural Night featuring the world-renowned choral group Philippine Madrigal Singers with special performances by the Philippine Embassy Youth Choir.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers performed on both occasion, as they showcased their own renditions of Filipino and international songs. Attendees from the Myanmar government especially loved the rendition of the Ka Chin Myay, a Myanmar folk song.

The Philippine Embassy Youth Choir, composed of students ages 10 to 15 years, and under the tutelage of Third Secretary and Vice Consul Stephanie Alexis Cruz, performed the national anthems of Myanmar and the Philippines during the Philippine Cultural Night. END
