PH Embassy in Nairobi Celebrates 121st Philippine Independence

NAIROBI 04 July 2019 — On the occasion of the 121st Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, the Filipino community in Nairobi joined the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi, led by Ambassador to Kenya Alex G. Chua and Madame Marie Marla Chua, in a simple flag-raising ceremony and Filipino breakfast on 12 June 2019.
Ambassador Chua remarked that while the Filipino community in Nairobi already celebrated the occasion on 09 June 2019, the “Pagwagayway ng Watawat (waving of the flag),” on the same day as it was done 121 years ago is important.
He stressed that Philippine Independence Day is not only the reminder of the great lengths the forefathers went through to ensure that our nation is free from the clutches of colonial rule, but also, a celebration for the constantly growing Filipino diaspora wherein the Independence Day is the reminder of their heritage, the Filipino values and tradition and Philippines as home.
The celebration is especially significant in East Africa where the theme this year: “Tapang ng Bayan, Malasakit sa Mamamayan,” truly resonates, because each Filipino in East Africa has to brave and overcome preconceptions and endure the harder life in Africa to provide for their families back home and contribute to the economy of the Philippines.
There are around 350 Filipinos in Kenya, most of whom are located in Nairobi. END
