OTTAWA 16 June 2022 – The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa celebrated the 124th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with three events.
On 10 June 2022, the Philippine Embassy joined the Filipino community in Ottawa for the annual Philippine Independence Day Gala, organized by the Philippine Independence Committee of the Ottawa Valley (PICOV), an association of Filipino community organizations in Ottawa.
The celebration had Philippine Ambassador to Canada Rodolfo D. Robles as guest speaker who in his remarks, encouraged the community to continue commemorating and celebrating Philippine independence and pass on their heritage to the next generation.
On 12 June, Ambassador Robles was joined by Ottawa City Mayor Jim Watson, and members of the Filipino Community led by the Philippine Independence Committee of the Ottawa Valley (PICOV) Chairperson Nora Arriola as the Philippine Flag was hoisted on the City Hall grounds.
The Filipino community flag-raising ceremony is a traditional event at Ottawa City Hall but was restricted to a limited number of participants in the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the recent lifting of health and safety restrictions, close to a hundred people joined the celebration despite the rainy weather.
Later that evening, Ambassador Robles and officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy joined the Filipino community in Ottawa for the Philippine Independence Day mass held at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Ottawa Following the Eucharistic Celebration, an Independence Day reception was held at the social hall of the parish, hosted by the Philippine Independence Committee of the Ottawa Valley.
