PHNOM PENH 13 June 2022 — The Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh celebrated the 124th anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence at the Hyatt Regency, Phnom Penh, with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn, as Guest of Honor.

In his toast to the continued good health of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and the Filipino people, the Foreign Minister acknowledged the long-standing bonds of friendship between the Philippines and Cambodia. Close to 7,000 overseas Filipinos are living and working in Cambodia. FM Prak affirmed his nation’s happiness in offering them a second home in the Kingdom.

FM Prak was joined by Dr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, and Mr. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Delegate Attached to the Prime Minister. Officials of other Cambodian ministries, members of the Diplomatic Corps and International Organizations, Cambodian and Filipino business leaders and entrepreneurs were also present in honoring Philippine Independence and commemorating the 65-years of diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Cambodia.

In her remarks, Amb. Maria Amelita Aquino highlighted the deep political, economic and socio-cultural ties that bind the Philippines and Cambodia. She reiterated the commitment forged during last year’s Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting between PH Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. and Foreign Minister Prak to expand and deepen bilateral cooperation with Cambodia. Highlighting the recently concluded elections in the Philippines and the ongoing transition to a new Government, Amb. Aquino reassured that “while there will be a new leadership in the Philippines, what remains unchanged is the steadfast commitment to continuing friendship with countries around the world – both traditional and non-traditional partners.”

On 12 June, Ambassador Aquino invited members of the Filipino Community in Cambodia in the traditional flag raising event at the Embassy grounds. The leaders of SAMAPI - the umbrella organization of Filipino groups in Cambodia, the Teachers Learning Action Guild in Cambodia, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, the Philippine Arnis Academy, and the Brothers of Salesian Don Bosco, took part in honoring the Philippine flag and listening to the Independence Day messages of President Duterte and Foreign Secretary Locsin.
