PH Embassy in Rome Celebrates 124th PH Independence Day

ROME 17 June 2022 – The Philippine Embassy in Rome, led by Philippine Ambassador to Italy Domingo P. Nolasco, commemorated the 124th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on 12 June 2022 at the Embassy premises. 

With the theme “Kalayaan 2022: Pagsuong sa Hamon ng Panibagong Bukas,” the ceremony honored the sacrifices of the Filipino heroes who laid the foundation for the peace and sovereignty which the Filipinos enjoy today. 

The celebration began with a flag-raising ceremony at the Embassy grounds and a wreath-laying activity at the bust of Dr. Jose Rizal inside the chancery. The Embassy officers and two children of the Embassy personnel joined the Ambassador during the wreath-laying ceremony.  

During the program held at the Social Hall of the Embassy, Ambassador Nolasco welcomed the Embassy personnel and their family members. He noted that many activities are planned in Rome and in the Philippines to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between PH and Italy this year. Guided by the theme for this year’s Independence Day celebration, he also encouraged the attendees to maintain close camaraderie and unity as one people. 

The guests gathered also viewed the Independence Day video messages of Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., and cultural performances. Philippine folk dances, namely La Jota Moncadeña and the Kappa Malong Malong, as well as a Balagtasan piece on the theme Sipag o Talino, were performed by selected Embassy personnel and family members. 

A storytelling of Bahay Kubo and a Philippine flag-making workshop were likewise organized for the children, while a bugtong (riddle) game for personnel and adult family members were held. END
